What is an aeroponic tower?
A vertical garden in which plants grow in pockets on a tall column with no soil. A small pump lifts water mixed with nutrients to the top, and it falls through the tower over the roots, which hang in air. Most home towers hold 20 to 40 plants in about 2 by 2 feet of floor space.
What is the difference between an aeroponic and a hydroponic tower?
Both grow plants without soil in nutrient water. In an aeroponic tower the roots hang in air and are sprayed or showered with nutrient water; in most hydroponic towers the roots sit in a growing medium or a film of water. For a home the care is similar: keep the tank topped up, check the pH and nutrients, and keep the pump running.
Is a grow light included?
No. The tower needs four to six hours of direct sun a day, which most south- or west-facing balconies and terraces get. For a shaded spot or indoors, a grow light has to be added and is priced separately.
What can I grow in an aeroponic tower?
Lettuce, spinach, pak choi, kale, basil, mint, coriander and other leafy greens and herbs grow best. Strawberries, cherry tomatoes and capsicum can grow with support and more light. Root crops such as carrot and potato are not suited to a tower.
How much space does an aeroponic tower need?
About 2 by 2 feet of floor space, a nearby power socket for the pump, and four to six hours of sunlight or a grow light.
