Gardeners and garden care in Rahatani

Rahatani sits on the bank of the Pavana, right beside Pimple Saudagar and well under a kilometre from our office, and much of its new housing went up for people who work in the Hinjawadi IT park about 7 km away. Its gardens are mostly balconies, terraces and society compounds that need regular care from people who are not home in the day.

Homes and gardens in Rahatani

Rahatani is a developing residential area: newer society towers stand alongside the older village lanes and independent houses near the river. Flats in the towers mean balcony and podium gardens; the older houses often have a small open plot or a flat roof that can carry a kitchen garden in grow bags.

Gardens for households that are out all day

A good share of Rahatani's residents commute to Hinjawadi, so a balcony garden here has to run without daily attention. We plan for that from the start: plants that tolerate a missed watering, a light potting mix, and drip on a timer from the flat's storage.

For homes that want more than a set of pots, a gardener can visit on a fixed weekly or fortnightly day to feed, prune and treat pests, and send photos after each visit.

Near the Pavana

Plots close to the river hold more moisture in the monsoon and can stay soggy for days after heavy rain. In those gardens we raise the beds, open up the soil with compost and sand, and choose plants that tolerate wet roots for a few weeks, such as kardal (canna), banana and arbi, keeping drought-lovers like adenium in pots.

Pimpri-Chinchwad has had water on alternate days since 2019, so even riverside gardens are watered by timer from storage in the dry months.

Society compounds

Many of the newer societies have a lawn, a children's play area and a planted boundary that the committee must maintain. We take these over on an annual contract with gardeners deployed to the site and a monthly report for the committee.

Questions

Gardening in Rahatani

How far is Rahatani from your office?

Our office is in neighbouring Pimple Saudagar, less than a kilometre from the centre of Rahatani.

We both work in Hinjawadi. Can a balcony garden look after itself?

Largely, yes. We choose hardy plants, use a light potting mix and fit drip on a timer. A gardener visit every week or two keeps it tidy and healthy.

Our plot near the river floods in the monsoon. What can grow there?

Raise the beds, improve drainage with compost and sand, and use plants that tolerate wet roots for a while, such as canna, banana and arbi. Keep drought-loving plants in pots.

Do you take garden maintenance contracts for societies in Rahatani?

Yes, on an annual contract with gardeners deployed to the compound, supervision and a monthly report with photos.
