Local conditions

Planning for Ahmedabad's climate

Fig. 01Climate and soil

Ahmedabad has very hot, dry summers and a short monsoon, so water is the main constraint. Drip irrigation, mulching and drought-tolerant native plants make gardens here last.

Plant in the monsoon in July and August. Winter from November to February is the best growing season. From April to June, water early in the morning and shade young plants.

Working a garden through Ahmedabad's heat

Ahmedabad's average summer maximum is 43°C and the city has recorded 48°C. In 2013 it became the first city in South Asia with a Heat Action Plan, written after the 2010 heat wave killed more than 1,300 people. Garden maintenance in Ahmedabad has to protect both the garden and the people who tend it, across offices on SG Highway, the GIDC estates at Vatva, Odhav and Changodar, hospitals, colleges, societies and bungalows.

The city's Heat Action Plan named outdoor workers as one of the groups most at risk in extreme heat. On a garden contract here, mowing, hedge trimming and other heavy work belong in the early morning through April, May and June.

A lawn can scorch in two days without water in May. When a deployed gardener falls ill in the hottest weeks, replacement cover keeps the watering going, and the supervisor's visits check that it has.

Three wet months, nine dry ones

The monsoon runs from mid-June to mid-September and brings about 800 mm of rain. Drip lines and sprinklers carry the garden for the rest of the year, so irrigation upkeep is the steady core of the contract.

Winter, from November to February, is mild, with highs around 30°C. That is the season for seasonal planting and full flower beds, while the summer plan keeps to hardy shrubs and lawns.

Factory and office gardens in the GIDC estates

The GIDC estates at Vatva, Odhav and Changodar hold textile, chemical and pharmaceutical plants whose entrance lawns and hedges sit beside dusty roads. Dust settles on leaves in the dry months, so hedges and potted plants are washed down and green waste is cleared on every visit.

One contract can cover an office on SG Highway and a plant in a GIDC estate, each with its own deployed gardener and one monthly report with photos.
