Local conditions
Planning for Chandigarh's climate
Fig. 01Climate and soil
Chandigarh has hot summers, a monsoon from July to September and cold winters with occasional frost. Its alluvial soil suits lawns, flowering beds and fruit trees.
Fig. 02When to plant and how to care
Trees and lawns go in during the monsoon. Winter is the best season for flowers and vegetables. Protect tender plants from frost in December and January.
Garden Maintenance Services · Chandigarh
A garden on treated water
Chandigarh waters its parks and green belts with tertiary-treated water from its own sewage treatment plants, and houses and institutions on plots of one kanal or more are required to take a treated-water connection. Garden maintenance in Chandigarh starts from that supply, and our contracts cover offices in the IT Park, units in the Industrial Area, hospitals, colleges, housing societies and large kothis across the tricity.
The municipal corporation runs a treated-water network of about 400 km, now being extended, and uses it on some 1,800 parks and green belts so that drinking water is saved for drinking. Under the Water Bylaws, 2015, plots of one kanal and above must connect to it, and the corporation has moved to penalise those that do not.
Treated water carries nitrogen that grass responds to, but the separate pipes, sprinklers and drip lines that carry it need regular checks. Irrigation upkeep on a Chandigarh contract includes keeping that line working through the dry months.
Fog, frost and a hot summer
Tricity winters bring cold waves, dense fog and ground frost, and January minimums have dropped to between 1 and 3°C in recent years. Frost scorches tender bedding plants and browns unprotected lawns, so seasonal beds and potted plants need cover on the coldest nights.
Summer swings the other way, with temperatures that have touched 46°C before the monsoon brings most of the city's roughly 1,000 mm of rain. Hedges and lawns grow fastest from July, and the visit plan shifts from watering to mowing and trimming.
Trees need the Administration's permission
Under the Chandigarh Trees Preservation Order, 1952, no tree may be cut down or lopped without permission, and the Administration asks for prior permission even for trees on private land. A dangerous tree can be reported through the Chandigarh Smart City portal, which works as a single window for tree complaints.
Tree care on our contracts covers approved pruning, pest and disease control and watering of young trees. The monthly report with photos shows the state of the trees, so a weak branch is noticed before it turns into a hazard.
