Local conditions

Planning for Kolkata's climate

Fig. 01Climate and soil

Kolkata is hot and humid with a long, heavy monsoon. Drainage is the first thing to get right in any garden, and plants need protection from fungal disease in the rains.

Fig. 02When to plant and how to care

Plant trees at the start of the monsoon. Winter from November to February is the season for flowers and vegetables, which is when Kolkata's gardens look best.

Trees that can stand a storm

When Cyclone Amphan struck in May 2020, about 5,000 trees fell across Kolkata, many with their roots boxed in by concrete around the base. Garden maintenance in Kolkata has to look after trees as carefully as lawns, and our contracts cover offices in Salt Lake Sector V and New Town, factories, hospitals, colleges, housing complexes and old bungalow gardens.

A city tree needs far more soil room for its roots than most Kolkata trees get, and the Calcutta High Court ordered concrete bases around trees to be removed in July 2019. Tree care on a campus starts with giving roots space and keeping the basin open, watered and fed with manure.

Tree experts warned after Amphan that heavy, one-sided lopping unbalances a crown and makes it easier for wind to topple. Pruning on our contracts aims for a balanced crown before the storm season, and felling a tree needs permission under the West Bengal Trees Act, 2006.

Humid months and fungal pressure

Kolkata gets about 1,850 mm of rain, mostly from June to September, with July and August the wettest months. Lawns stay soggy, weeds grow fast, and fungal disease spreads on shrubs and potted plants.

Pest and disease control is busiest in these months, and garden drains are kept clear of leaves and cuttings so beds do not stand in water. Mowing and weeding are fitted between showers.

Nor'westers and the dry season

Before the monsoon, the squalls known as kal baishakhi or nor'westers bring sudden wind and hail. Broken branches and debris are cleared after each one as part of garden cleaning.

The mild winter is the season for flower beds and seasonal planting. One contract can cover an office in Sector V and a plant outside the city, each with its own deployed gardener and one monthly report with photos.
