Local conditions
Planning for New Delhi's climate
Fig. 01Climate and soil
Delhi NCR has very hot summers, a short monsoon and cold, foggy winters, with poor air quality for much of the year. Plants need shade and deep watering in May and June, frost care in January, and regular cleaning of dust from leaves.
Fig. 02When to plant and how to care
Plant trees and lawns in the monsoon from July to September. Winter annuals go in during October and November. Air-purifying indoor plants are most in demand from October to February, when outdoor air is worst.
Garden Maintenance Services · New Delhi
A year of heat, rain, fog and frost
Garden maintenance services in Delhi have to carry a garden through two extremes in one year: May afternoons that can pass 45°C and early-January nights near 0°C, with about 775 mm of rain in between, most of it in July and August. We deploy gardeners on an annual contract to offices in Nehru Place, Jasola and Aerocity, hospitals, institutional campuses, housing societies and large bungalows, and plan each month's work around those swings.
Lawns and potted plants lose water fastest in May and June, before the monsoon reaches Delhi at the end of June or in the first week of July. Sprinkler heads, drip lines and hose points are checked ahead of the heat, so no corner of the lawn goes dry on a 45°C day.
From late December, cold waves bring night temperatures close to 0°C, and dense fog can cut off the sun for days. Tender potted plants and seasonal beds need cover on frost nights, and mowing slows because grass barely grows until February.
Pruning a tree in Delhi needs the Tree Officer
The Delhi High Court has held that no tree in Delhi may be pruned except under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994, with the Tree Officer's permission, whatever the tree's girth. An earlier guideline that let thin branches be cut without permission was set aside.
Tree care on a Delhi site is therefore planned, not done on impulse. Our supervisor records which trees need work, the owner applies with that list, and the approved pruning is carried out along with pest and disease control on the rest.
Clearing leaves without burning them
Open burning of leaves and garden waste is banned in Delhi under National Green Tribunal orders, and the city's environment department has authorised officials to fine offenders on the spot. A garden that sheds heavily in spring needs its leaves bagged and cleared, never set alight in a corner.
Clearing leaf litter, hedge cuttings and grass clippings is part of every gardener's routine, along with weeding and flower-bed care. One contract can also cover offices or plants in Gurugram and Noida, with one monthly report with photos.

Questions
Frequently asked
Can trees in our Delhi office compound be pruned without permission?
No. Every pruning in Delhi needs the Tree Officer's permission under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994. We list the trees that need work so the application can be made, and prune once it is granted.
How are plants looked after during Delhi's winter cold waves?
Tender potted plants and seasonal beds are covered on frost nights, watering is reduced, and mowing slows until the grass starts growing again in February.
What happens to the fallen leaves from our garden?
They are swept, bagged and cleared as part of garden cleaning. Burning garden waste in the open is banned in Delhi.
