Local conditions

Planning for Pune's climate

Fig. 01Climate and soil

Pune has a mild climate for most of the year, a monsoon from June to September and a dry, hot spell from March to May. Most tropical indoor plants and lawns do well if they are watered deeply through the summer.

Plant new gardens and trees at the start of the monsoon in June and July. Winter flowers go in from October. From March to May, increase watering and shade young plants on terraces.

Garden Maintenance Services · Pune

Four wet months, eight dry ones

Garden maintenance in Pune runs on a short, sharp calendar. The city gets most of its 650 to 700 mm of rain between June and September, and lawns, hedges and creepers put on most of the year's growth in those four months. Our garden maintenance services in Pune put deployed gardeners on offices in Hinjewadi's Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, factories in the MIDC estates, hospitals, campuses and housing societies under one annual contract planned around that wet spell.

From late June a Pune lawn can need mowing every week, hedges lose their shape within a fortnight and weeds come up in every bed. A gardener on site every day keeps pace with that growth, and the supervisor's visits check that mowing, hedge trimming and weeding have not fallen behind.

Once the rain stops, usually in October, the work turns to watering. Drip lines and sprinklers that sat idle through the monsoon are checked for blocked emitters and broken joints before the dry months, when a missed watering shows on the lawn within days.

Tree work needs the Tree Authority's approval

Trees on private land in Pune are protected under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. Before branches are trimmed, the PMC Tree Authority asks for an application, a photo of the branches and an undertaking that only dangerous branches will be cut, so pre-monsoon pruning has to be planned weeks ahead.

Since the 2021 amendments, a tree estimated at 50 years or more counts as a heritage tree, and felling one means planting as many trees as its age. Older campuses and bungalow plots in Pune often have such trees, so tree care there leans on careful pruning and pest and disease control that keep the tree sound.

Several Pune sites under one contract

A company with an office in Hinjewadi, a plant at Chakan and a guest house in Koregaon Park can cover all three under one contract. Each site has its own deployed gardener, and one monthly report with photos covers every site.

Leaf litter, hedge cuttings and grass clippings pile up fastest in the monsoon. Garden cleaning is part of the routine, so green waste is cleared from beds, paths and garden drains before it blocks the run-off in the next heavy shower.
