Local conditions

Planning for Indore's climate

Fig. 01Climate and soil

Indore sits on the Malwa plateau with black cotton soil, hot summers and a good monsoon. Black soil holds water but cracks when dry, so gardens here need soil mixing and mulching.

Fig. 02When to plant and how to care

Plant in the monsoon from late June. Winter vegetables and flowers do well from October to February. Mulch beds and water deeply from March to June.

Where Indore's garden waste goes

Indore produces about 30 tonnes of green waste a day, rising to 60 to 70 tonnes when trees shed their leaves, and branches and wood from large institutions now go to a dedicated green waste processing plant. Garden maintenance in Indore works inside that clean-city system, and our contracts put deployed gardeners and green-waste clearing in one plan for offices on the Super Corridor and at Crystal IT Park, factories, hospitals, colleges and housing societies.

Under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, Indore Municipal Corporation set up the country's first public-private green waste processing plant at Bicholi Hapsi, which turns wood and branches into sawdust and pellets. Green waste from the premises of major institutions is collected directly for the plant, for a fixed fee.

That makes garden cleaning on an Indore campus a sorting job as much as a sweeping one. Branches and wood are kept apart from leaves and clippings, so the woody waste is ready for collection and the soft waste can be composted.

Bulk generators handle their own wet waste

Indore lowered its bulk waste generator threshold to 30 kg a day, against the national 100 kg, and had identified 287 such generators by 2025. Many offices, hospitals and societies therefore already process their organic waste on their own premises.

Manure is part of our contract. On a site that makes its own compost, that compost goes back into beds and tree basins before the monsoon and after it, so the garden is fed from the site's own waste.

Malwa's weather through the year

Indore gets 700 to 800 mm of rain between June and September, and the cool Malwa nights keep summer milder than on the plains further north. The months from March to the monsoon are still dry, and lawns depend on irrigation that has been checked before the heat.

The monsoon brings the year's fastest growth, so mowing, hedge trimming and weeding are busiest from July. As the rain stops, flower beds are replanted for winter, the best season for colour in Indore.
