For Kolkata and Howrah

We design and build gardens around homes: the front garden and entrance, the side strip, the back lawn, a courtyard or a housing society's common garden. You get a scaled drawing and a plant list suited to your city's weather and your hours of sun, then our team lays the beds, lawn, paths, edging, lighting and drip irrigation, and plants it. After handover the garden can be looked after on a monthly plan.

Our team for Kolkata serves Salt Lake Sector V, New Town, Rajarhat, Park Street, Ballygunge, EM Bypass, Alipore, Behala, Howrah and Dum Dum.

Who it is for — Bungalow, villa and row-house owners, builders handing over homes, and housing societies.

Local conditions

Planning for Kolkata's climate

Fig. 01Climate and soil

Kolkata is hot and humid with a long, heavy monsoon. Drainage is the first thing to get right in any garden, and plants need protection from fungal disease in the rains.

Fig. 02When to plant and how to care

Plant trees at the start of the monsoon. Winter from November to February is the season for flowers and vegetables, which is when Kolkata's gardens look best.

Raising the garden above wet ground

Kolkata gets about 1,850 mm of rain, most of it from June to September, and much of the city sits on low, clay-heavy ground that holds water close to the surface. Garden design and landscaping in Kolkata is planned around that water: beds raised above the lawn, lawns graded to drain, and plants that stay healthy through months of humidity. We design and build gardens for old bungalows in Alipore and Ballygunge, houses in Salt Lake and New Town, and the gardens of housing complexes.

On low ground in parts of the EM Bypass belt and Howrah, water sits on clay long after the rain. Beds are raised and edged in brick, the lawn gets a slight fall towards a drain, and lawn edges are set against a border so they keep their shape on soft ground.

Paths and sit-outs are laid with a fall away from the house walls, and where a corner always floods, it becomes a planted bog or a small pond instead of a lawn that will not survive.

Plants for Bengal's humidity

Coconut and supari palms have grown around Kolkata homes for generations, and krishnachura (gulmohar), radhachura and kadam give shade and colour. Shiuli (parijat), gandharaj and kamini bring scent near the house, and heliconia, ferns and caladiums fill shaded courtyards.

Fungal disease spreads fast on crowded shrubs in July and August, so the plan spaces plants for air to move between them. The mild winter is the best season for flower beds: dahlia, chrysanthemum, petunia and marigold go in from November.

Trees that can stand a storm

About 5,000 trees fell in Kolkata when Cyclone Amphan struck in May 2020, many with their roots boxed in by concrete. New trees are planted with open basins and room for roots, away from walls and paving, and existing trees are kept with their basins opened up.

Nor'westers, the kal baishakhi squalls before the monsoon, bring sudden wind and hail, so tall plants near the house are staked, and planting is timed for the cooler months, when roots settle before the next wet season.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do you stop a Kolkata garden from waterlogging?

We raise the beds, grade the lawn towards a drain, and lay paths with a fall away from the house. A corner that always floods can become a pond or bog garden instead of lawn.

Which plants suit a Kolkata home garden?

Coconut and supari palms, krishnachura, radhachura and kadam for trees; shiuli, gandharaj and kamini for scent; heliconia and ferns for shade; dahlia, chrysanthemum and petunia for winter beds.

When is the best time to plant a garden in Kolkata?

The cooler months from October to February, so roots settle before the monsoon tests the drainage. Winter flower beds go in from November.

Do you provide garden design and landscaping for homes across Kolkata?

Yes. We work across Kolkata and Howrah, including Salt Lake Sector V, New Town, Rajarhat, Park Street, Ballygunge and EM Bypass.

What does garden design and landscaping for homes cost in Kolkata?

Garden Design and Landscaping for Homes in Kolkata is priced for each project in a written proposal, since the cost depends on the space, the crops and how much is automated.

How do you serve Kolkata?

Our team visits Kolkata once you agree the proposal, and maintenance is carried out by gardeners deployed in the city for your contract. Message us on WhatsApp to book a date.

What does garden design include?

A site visit, a scaled layout drawing, a plant list chosen for your sun, soil and city, and a list of materials for beds, paths and watering. If you want, our team then builds and plants it.

How is the price of a home garden worked out?

From the area, the share that is lawn, beds or paving, the size of plants you want on day one, and whether irrigation and lighting are included. You get a fixed figure in a written proposal after the site visit.

Can you redo an existing garden instead of starting fresh?

Yes. We keep the healthy trees and shrubs, move what is in the wrong place, and redesign the beds, lawn and paths around them.

Do you design small gardens and side strips?

Yes. Narrow side strips, small front gardens and courtyards often need the most careful plant choice, because every plant is seen up close.

Will the garden need a gardener every day?

No. We design for the upkeep you can give: drip on a timer, plants suited to the site, mulched beds and less lawn where it would struggle. A weekly or fortnightly visit keeps most home gardens in shape.
