For Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai

We design and build gardens around homes: the front garden and entrance, the side strip, the back lawn, a courtyard or a housing society's common garden. You get a scaled drawing and a plant list suited to your city's weather and your hours of sun, then our team lays the beds, lawn, paths, edging, lighting and drip irrigation, and plants it. After handover the garden can be looked after on a monthly plan.

Our team for Mumbai serves Bandra Kurla Complex, Lower Parel, Worli, Andheri, Powai, Goregaon, Malad, Thane, Vashi and Airoli.

Who it is for — Bungalow, villa and row-house owners, builders handing over homes, and housing societies.

Local conditions

Planning for Mumbai's climate

Fig. 01Climate and soil

Mumbai is humid all year with a heavy monsoon and salty sea air. Most homes have balconies rather than terraces, and plants need good drainage and protection from strong wind.

Fig. 02When to plant and how to care

Plant just before or early in the monsoon. Watch for fungal problems in July and August. October to February is the best time for flowering plants on balconies.

Drainage before planting

A home garden in Mumbai has about 2,500 mm of rain to handle in four months, then a long dry stretch, and near the sea, salt on the wind. Garden design and landscaping in Mumbai is built around drainage first: beds and lawns that shed a July downpour, paths that do not turn into streams, and plants that stay healthy in months of wet leaves. We design and build gardens for bungalows in Bandra, Juhu and Chembur, row houses and villas in Thane and Navi Mumbai, and the podium and ground-floor gardens of housing societies.

Much of the ground is basalt-derived soil that drains poorly once disturbed, so beds are lifted, mixed with compost and coarse sand, and given a fall towards a garden drain. Paths are laid slightly above the beds with gravel or permeable paving, which lets water soak away instead of flooding the lawn.

Podium gardens over a basement or parking need a drainage layer and waterproofing check under every bed, the same care a terrace gets, because water that cannot leave a podium finds its way into the floor below.

Plants for rain, humidity and salt

Coastal gardens in the western suburbs get salt-laden wind, so the outer edge is planted with tougher plants such as coconut, pandanus, bougainvillea and hibiscus, known here as jaswand, with softer plants sheltered behind them. Heliconia, ginger lilies, crotons and areca palms enjoy the humidity and fill shaded corners between buildings.

Mexican grass handles the dry months from November to May with less water than Korean grass, and covered courtyards with little sun are better as paving with potted plants than as a lawn that will not hold its colour.

Timing and tree permissions

Planting is timed to the monsoon, which sets in around 10 June, so new lawns and shrubs root with the rain. Winter, from November, is the best season for flower beds in Mumbai.

No tree in Mumbai may be trimmed without written permission from the BMC Tree Officer, and a society is held responsible if a tree on its land falls in the monsoon. A garden redesign around old trees includes booking the pruning they need before the rains.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which plants do well in a sea-facing garden in Mumbai?

Coconut, pandanus, bougainvillea, jaswand (hibiscus) and other hardy shrubs take salt wind well. Softer flowering plants are placed behind them, out of the direct wind.

Can you design a garden on a society podium?

Yes. We check the waterproofing and lay a drainage layer under every bed, and choose plants and soil depth that suit the podium's load and the sun it gets between buildings.

When should we start a new garden in Mumbai?

Ground work and drainage are best done before June, with planting as the monsoon sets in. Flower beds are planned for the winter months from November.

Do we need BMC permission to prune trees in our garden?

Yes. Trimming any tree needs written permission from the Tree Officer, which can be booked through the BMC website or the MCGM app.

Do you provide garden design and landscaping for homes across Mumbai?

Yes. We work across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, including Bandra Kurla Complex, Lower Parel, Worli, Andheri, Powai and Goregaon.

What does garden design and landscaping for homes cost in Mumbai?

Garden Design and Landscaping for Homes in Mumbai is priced for each project in a written proposal, since the cost depends on the space, the crops and how much is automated.

How do you serve Mumbai?

Our team visits Mumbai once you agree the proposal, and maintenance is carried out by gardeners deployed in the city for your contract. Message us on WhatsApp to book a date.

What does garden design include?

A site visit, a scaled layout drawing, a plant list chosen for your sun, soil and city, and a list of materials for beds, paths and watering. If you want, our team then builds and plants it.

How is the price of a home garden worked out?

From the area, the share that is lawn, beds or paving, the size of plants you want on day one, and whether irrigation and lighting are included. You get a fixed figure in a written proposal after the site visit.

Can you redo an existing garden instead of starting fresh?

Yes. We keep the healthy trees and shrubs, move what is in the wrong place, and redesign the beds, lawn and paths around them.

Do you design small gardens and side strips?

Yes. Narrow side strips, small front gardens and courtyards often need the most careful plant choice, because every plant is seen up close.

Will the garden need a gardener every day?

No. We design for the upkeep you can give: drip on a timer, plants suited to the site, mulched beds and less lawn where it would struggle. A weekly or fortnightly visit keeps most home gardens in shape.
